Dear Membership,
The Anchorage, Alaska NAACP reading lab is ready to be staffed by volunteers into phases.
First, we need about 16 volunteers to do the first stage trial, as a proof of concept. This involves two or three Zoom sessions which would develop the coaching practice with in the Breakrooms feature of zoom along with the use of MindPlay for 1st grade and above and the use of Curious Learning’s feed the monster app for preschool and early kindergarten. From this effort coaching procedures and policies that need written can be identified and drafted.
Second, we need approximately 16 volunteers who will staff the pilot with real children. They can be the same 16 people or they can be different. This pilot is of a longer duration. It is completely individual to the child who is in the lab. Some children might be quickly remediated within eight weeks other children might need a whole year. After a child has completed eight sessions in MindPlay, we will have a good approximation of how long that child might need to stay in the lab. These first eight sessions are critical in that two things are going on. One is the job of the coach is to get buyin by the child and family so they are giving their very best. For some of the children this might be one or two sessions for others it might take longer to get them comfortable with the whole environment, with the coaches, and with the instruction from MindPlay.
If you are interested in volunteering please contact posieboggs@gmail.com to attend an orientation zoom meeting where you can ask any questions you might have and offer any brainstorming ideas to keep this project moving forward.
